How do I edit a Microsoft Teams classes meeting recording (and transcript) and make it available to students?

Microsoft Teams classes recordings can be edited using video editing software such as Camtasia or Canvas Studio. The edited recording can then be made available to students through Teams or within your topic site.

Transcript files can be edited in Microsoft Word and uploaded through Teams or within your topic site. Alternatively, you can generate captions while editing your recording.

Download the existing recording and transcript (if applicable)

Locate the recording

Locate the recordings folder

Click on the Files tab [1] at the top of the Teams page and then click on the Recordings folder [2].

Download the recording

Download recording

Click on the ellipsis [1] for the recording and then click Download [2].

The recording will be saved to the Downloads folder on your computer.

Download the transcript file (if applicable)

Download the transcript file if you want to provide students with an edited version. If you add captions to your recording, you may want to skip this step.

Click on the ellipsis [1] for the transcript and then click Download as .docx.

The transcript will be saved to the Downloads folder on your computer.

Delete the existing recording and transcript

After you’ve downloaded the recording and transcript, you can delete them if you don’t want students viewing them. Follow these instructions on how to delete meeting recordings and transcripts.

Edit the existing recording (and add captions if applicable)

Using Canvas Studio

Using Camtasia

Ensure you have Camtasia installed (request via Service One).
Import the recording you downloaded earlier (check your Downloads folder).
Edit your recording. You can choose to display captions in your video but check them for accuracy. Note: Captions produced in Canvas Studio appear to be more accurate (see Using Canvas Studio above).
Export your video to provide it to students through Microsoft Teams or your topic site.

Edit the existing transcript (if applicable)

Find the transcript file you downloaded earlier (check your Downloads folder). Make your changes in Microsoft Word. You may want to rename it to indicate that it has been edited.

Make the edited resources available to students

Post in Microsoft Teams

Go to the end of the Teams meeting chat (Posts tab) and click Reply.

Click the Attach files icon [1] and then select Upload from this device [2].

Browse your computer for the edited recording and transcript (if applicable) and select for upload.

Include some explanatory comments to students [1] and then click the Send icon [2].

The edited file/s will appear in the chat (Posts tab) and in the Files tab. For a consistent student experience, you may want to move the edited recording to the Recordings folder.

You may want to send an announcement to students letting them know about the updated resource/s.

Publish in your topic site

Video files need to be uploaded to your topic site using Canvas Studio.

It’s recommended that you create a new page (or edit an existing page) to embed the edited recording and insert the edited transcript (if applicable).

Follow these instructions on how to embed Canvas Studio media. If you used Canvas Studio to edit your recording, it will be available for you to select. If you used Camtasia to edit your recording, you can upload the video as part of this process.

Follow these instructions on how to upload a document in the Rich Content Editor if you’re providing an edited transcript file.
